Kitten Teething: What to Expect

Teething is a big step in your kitten’s growth. From chew-happy behaviour to sore gums, here’s how to spot the signs and help them feel better.

It’s National Kitten Day! What better time to celebrate the small, playful, wobbly bundles of energy that fill our homes with joy?

If you’re caring for a young kitten, you may notice a few curious habits: chewing, nibbling, and the occasional bitey moment. These are often signs that your kitten is teething.

So, here’s what to expect, and how you can help them through it.

When do kittens start teething?

Kittens usually begin teething at around 2 to 3 weeks old, when their baby teeth start coming through. Then the main teething phase kicks in between 3 and 6 months, when those baby teeth fall out to make room for their shiny new adult set.

It’s totally normal for your kitten to chew more during this stage. They’re not being naughty, just easing their sore gums!

Common kitten teething signs

Every kitten is different, but here are a few signs to look for:

  • Extra chewing or biting (including your fingers!)
  • Mild drooling
  • Occasional bleeding gums
  • Eating less or being picky with food
  • A few missing teeth along the way

How to help a teething kitten

This is where a little extra care goes a long way:

  • Offer soft, easy-to-chew foods like Encore’s wet kitten range to keep mealtimes gentle and tasty!
  • Avoid hard treats or dry foods that may be uncomfortable for your kitten during this stage.
  • Distract them from chewing your hands or feet by giving them something safer to chew on like a teething toy or cold washcloth. If you’re kitten’s still getting bitey with you, leave them be for a bit so they’re not tempted!

And most importantly, give them lots of gentle reassurance and space to nap. Teething can be tiring!

Kittenhood goes by fast, teething phase and all. Take time to enjoy the funny chews, playful pounces, and sleepy cuddles.
