Create a stress-free Easter for your cat

Easter is full of fun and celebration; but for your cat, all the noise, visitors, and sweet treats can be a lot to handle. From calming spaces to cat-safe treats, here’s how to create a peaceful and happy environment for your feline friend this Easter.

Easter is a time for fun, family gatherings, and plenty of treats—but for our feline friends, all the excitement can be overwhelming and even stressful. New decorations, unusual smells, and noisy celebrations can disrupt their routine, while Easter treats and traditions may pose hidden dangers.

At Encore, we want your cat to enjoy Easter as much as you do! Here’s how to create a safe, happy, and stress-free environment for your cat this Easter.

1. Create a Quiet, Safe Space

Visitors, loud celebrations, or changes in routine mean, Easter can be a stressful time for cats, especially those that prefer peace and quiet.

How to Keep Your Cat Calm:

  • Set up a quiet retreat in a separate room with their favourite bed, toys, and a litter tray. Don’t forget a water bowl and something tasty to snack on!
  • Keep background noise low by playing soft music or leaving the TV on.
  • If your cat is nervous around guests, let them hide – never force interactions.

Top tip: Consider using a cat pheromone diffuser to promote relaxation.

2. Give Your Cat a Special Easter Treat (That’s Safe!)

Chocolate and hot cross buns are toxic to cats, but that doesn’t mean they have to miss out on the Easter fun!

Cat-Safe Easter Treats:

  • A new interactive toy to keep them entertained and engaged.
  • A puzzle feeder to turn treat time into a fun stimulating challenge.

Top tip: Why not include your cat in the Easter egg hunt? By hiding their favourite treats or toys around the house for them to find!

3. Decorate with Cat-Safe Alternatives

Easter decorations can be tempting for playful paws, but some items like plastic grass, ribbons, and lilies can be dangerous.

Cat-Friendly Easter Decor:

  • Swap plastic Easter grass for paper-based decorations.
  • Keep candles, string lights, and breakable ornaments out of reach.
  • Use cat-safe flowering plants like sunflowers, roses, or orchids instead of lilies.

4. Keep Easter Egg Hunts Cat-Safe

Easter egg hunts are exciting for kids but can be risky for curious cats who might find (and try to eat) hidden chocolate eggs.

How to Make Easter Egg Hunts Pet-Friendly:

  • Keep all chocolate and sweet treats out of reach.
  • Count and collect all eggs at the end to ensure none are left behind.

Top tip: If your cat loves to “hunt,” hide their favourite toys or treats around the house to create their own Easter game!

5. Maintain Their Routine to Reduce Stress

Cats thrive on routine, and changes in their usual schedule, such as late-night celebrations or different meal times, can cause anxiety.

Easter Routine Tips:

  • Stick to regular feeding and playtimes as much as possible.
  • Give them a consistent space where they feel secure.
  • Provide extra attention and cuddles if they seem unsettled. Check on them regularly to make sure their needs are being met.

Top tip: If you’re travelling for Easter, arrange for a trusted pet sitter to check in on your cat at home instead of disrupting their environment.
